Inlander was fascinated by debates between abstract expressionism and figurative painting. He followed neither school, but this painting depicts the tensions between realism and abstraction. He never resolved his fascination with the physicality of nature and the inevitable transformations produced by images. These tensions are part of his art and this painting is one of the fullest expressions of how he engaged in experimentation and what he described as the reproduction of nature’s beauty.
